Our WHY ?

Girls Day Out

We often get asked why we started Girls Day Out?

It was simple really, we saw a need to provide an all girls sports day to have a go at particularly male dominated sports in a safe, inclusive environment. A day without judgement where sport sessions are led by accomplished female athletes of their chosen codes.

A day for girls to not watch from the sidelines, but to spend time with inspiring athletes learning from the best. Seeing firsthand their sport heroes are humans too who have achieved their dream through hard work and determination. A day to inspire girls to see they too can make anything possible.

Playing sport is not just about just being active, there is so much more it can give girls including:

  • Learning important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence
  • A more positive body image and improved psychological wellbeing and lower levels of depression
  • Higher levels of confidence and self-esteem
  • Learning how to take calculated risks and be assertive
  • Learning goal-setting, strategic thinking and pursuit of excellence in performance

With over 50% of girls aged 11-15 years dropping out of sport, we want to help reduce that number and encourage girls to stay in sport.

We need to change the narrative for girls dropping out in

Body image and puberty are significant factors for girls dropping out of sport. 78% say they avoid sport when they have their period while 73% don’t like others watching them take part in activity.

So how do we help change this?

  • We give our young girls access to inspiring female athletes through mentorship. Role models, especially when they are the same gender, can encourage girls to play sport and become more physically active.
  • Equal coverage of women’s and men’s sport in the media
  • More celebration of women’s achievements in sport
  • More support for girls’ and women’s teams
  • Provide more girl-only sports days, where girls can try a range of different sports
  • Provide appropriate female uniforms, and facilities for girls within the community
  • We build our girls up and empower them.

Our Why -

A FUN SPORTING EVENT!

Our 45 minute, mini-clinics are small and focused, giving the young girls a high-energy, fun taste of sports offered locally in the Hunter and played by incredible female athletes at the highest levels.

The mini-clinics are run by professional sportswomen, top female athletes and coaching staff from the sporting codes. The athletes & staff running the clinics spend time with the girls teaching them the skills of the sport.

After the practical session, our athletes spend some time answering questions, talking about what it’s like to be a top-level sportswoman, signing autographs and having photos.

The young girls are given a chance to see these extraordinary athletes are humans like all of us who have achieved their goals through hard work and determination.

It teaches our young ones that anything is possible and achievable – whether that’s to play professional sport or to be anything they want to be. Just like their role models, they too can achieve their dreams.
